Sundown @ Leigh Folk Festival 2016

helen mccookerybook Sundown will have its regular slot at the Leigh Folk Festival 2016 on Sunday, 26th June.  We’ll be on from 1.30 – 4.40pm.  This will be the 25th Anniversary of the festival, our FAVOURITE festival by the way, we’ve been involved for 10 years and do not intend to stop supporting it or being involved.  A great team of volunteers, including ourselves, who all pull together to put everything into this fantastic FREE weekend of music, spoken word, performance, art & more!

You can find us in the Clarendon Scout Hut, our previous home, in the centre of the High Street, check out the folk festival website for more info.

We will have our usual mix of live music, spoken word & comedy from:

HELEN McCOOKERYBOOK – guitarist and lead singer with Brighton-based punk band The Chefs during the late 70s, early 80s, before continuing her career as a solo artist, writer and lecturer. We are over the moon to have Helen involved and cannot wait to see her perform!

GIDEON CONN – Conn’s songwriting combines fingerpicking acoustic playing with jazz-inspired chord progressions and hip-hop rhythms, his vocals encompass singing, rapping and scatting.  He has been played on XFM, BBC Radio 1 and many high-profile names in the industry are self-professed fans.  Gideon is a unique performer and artist, you won’t want to miss this!

ROSIE WILBY – A comedian, musician, writer and broadcaster, Rosie has performed at Latitude Festival, The Comedy Store, on BBC Radio 4 and numerous other well-known festivals.  She has won numerous comedy awards including being a finalist for Funny Women in 2006.  We had Rosie perform quite a few years ago now at Sundown, we’ve been meaning to get her back and we thought during the day in a little scout hut for some comedy – yeah!

PLANTMAN – Local indie favourites Matt Randall and Adam Radmall.  Brilliant, brilliant music,  they’ve had much success on Arlen Records, made ‘Band of the Day’ in The Guardian in 2012, continue to produce critically acclaimed albums and play various festivals and well-known music venues.  New single ‘Honeydew’ was released in early 2016 so expect to hear new material as well as classics.

GILL WEST – Local poet and writer who has been writing for years, wrote a successful play for the Estuary Fringe Festival in 2015, continues to write inspiring and thought provoking poetry.  We love her work so thought she’d make a great featured poet this year for our festival appearance.

DOROTHY TURNER – Chair of Southend Poetry and writer since the 90s, has been publishing her poetry through anthologies since becoming involved as a Southend Poetry member.  A deep-thinking, subtle writer who is a great supporter of the arts and writing.

SIMON BLACKMAN – our resident L.F.F poet!  Expect wit, the comedy stare, Simon’s famous Milligan-esque poetry and a decent t-shirt probably.

SUNDOWN POETS – Yes, we will also be performing one or two odes ourselves….

I’m afraid JULIE COLLINGS has had to pull out due to unexpected circumstances.  We will consider a replacement but whatever happens, keep checking our website and social media for updates.  We are planning to have a bloody great time with you all!!
